Moreton Bay Ocean Paddle
The Moreton Bay Ocean Paddle is an event that appeals to nearly all open-water paddlers. Running annually in early May, the prevailing winds are commonly south-easterly. In such conditions, our preferred course starts from Tuckeroo Park Boat Ramp, Nudgee Beach on Kedron Brook. Paddlers make their way 2.5km to the last channel marker as Kedron Brook enters Moreton Bay, then turn left for the 10km downwind section to Bells Beach Park, Clontarf.
With a sheltered start area, all athletes have easy access.
Within Moreton Bay itself, conditions are relatively safe. Even in significant wind, it is wind chop that predominates, allowing skilled paddlers to excel while those with less experience or confidence in open water can still approach the conditions. It is not to say that unskilled paddlers should participate, but those with stability in their craft and the stamina to easily cover a 13km course, and are looking to extend themselves into open water should find our event approachable. We are looking to assist with developing paddlers to gain open water experience, not run an event that stipulates “experienced paddlers only”.
